Fire TV Remote Not Working / Re-Pair Fire TV Remote

Sometimes the Fire TV remote becomes un-paired with the Fire TV. Symptoms are likely that you can still use the remote to turn the TV on/off and change volume, but none of the other buttons on the remote make anything happen on the Fire TV screen.  The Fire TV remote uses both infrared/IR like a traditional TV remote to control TV power/volume and WiFi to control the Fire Stick, so the functions are separate. We do NOT recommend you swap Fire TV remotes and move them between TVs as they are programmed to control each TV power and volume individually.

Steps to re-pair or fix a Fire TV Remote that is not working - try the following in this order:
  1. Restart the Fire TV Stick  NOT RESET!  A quick hard reboot is recommended.  Do whatever option is easiest to reach.
    1. Unplug and re-plug the small micro-USB cable from the side of the Fire Stick (behind your TV).   Note: Unplugging the Fire Stick from TV HDMI does not reboot it.
    2. Unplug and re-plug the Fire TV from the wall power outlet itself.
  2.  Restart you Fire TV remote control.  Simply reboot the remote by removing and reinserting the same batteries (this fixes things most of the time):
    1. Use your thumbs to apply pressure on the back of the remote. Press down until the entire back cover slides down slightly.
    2. Lift the back cover up and away from the remote.
    3. Remove the two AAA batteries
    4. Wait 10 seconds
    5. Re-insert the two AAA batteries
    6. Reposition the back cover onto the remote, and slide to snap it into place.
  3. Next thing to try is replacing the Fire TV remote control's batteries. Make sure you are using brand new AAA batteries and the +/- is facing the correct way!
  4. If that doesn't work, try re-pairing the Fire TV remote. To fully reset and pair an existing Fire TV Remote, click here and select "3rd Generation Alexa Voice Remote".  For most newer remotes do this: Press and hold the LEFT, MENU, and BACK buttons simultaneously for about 12 seconds.
  5. After you’ve reset the remote, wait at least 10 seconds and then remove the batteries from your remote. Your remote is now reset so to connect it to your Fire TV, unplug and re-plug the Fire TV in, wait about 1 minute, then put the batteries in your remote. Lastly, press and hold the HOME button on your remote for about 10 seconds and it should pair with your Fire TV. If it doesn’t pair, repeat the steps from the start of this paragraph that start by removing the remote batteries.
  6. If that doesn't work, you can reach out to Amazon Support.
In the meantime, you can use your smartphone as a Fire TV remote.
  • Load the "Fire TV" app on your phone or tablet
  • If you don't already have the app on your phone/tablet, you can download it from the Google Play or Apple App Store
  • Make sure the phone or tablet is on the same WiFi network as your Fire TV
  • Open the Fire TV App, select "Remote" at the bottom
  • Select the correct Fire TV device from the list
  • Enter code from TV if you have never done this before
  • If you don't see the code and it's not working, you probably selected the wrong Fire TV from the list, so try again with a different Fire TV device
